What is Disco Night on 3 October?

The chalk board on the pavement is the listing. At the top: Sat 3 October, Disco Night, with DJ Joozt. Below that sits the pub quiz run, a different story. For 3 October this is the only line written outside.

DJ Joozt is the name on the board. A Haarlem-area DJ uses that spelling on joostrozendaal.nl. There he is Joost, from Hillegom, chamber of commerce 89368096. His site lists soul, funk, disco, house and dance. More than fifteen years of work, mostly Haarlem and Amsterdam. That is his own site. The venue has not put Disco Night on its agenda yet.

Where is De Stinkende Emmer?

Ramplaan 125, 2015 GV Haarlem. West side, on the meadows, looking toward Elswout estate. Not the Grote Markt. Officially ’t Wapen van Kennemerland. Locals say De Stinkende Emmer.

The about page tells the story. Building from 1864. First the Hof van Holland inn, later a house, a snack bar, a liquor shop, now a restaurant. Robbert van Berkel has run it since 21 April 2009. The nickname comes from Zandvoort fishwives. After the Haarlem market they left their fish buckets outside and took a drink inside. The neighbourhood called it the inn with the stinking buckets. Their page still cites about 300 fish carriers a day into town in 1881.

Terrace, hearth, bar. Open every day from 09:00 to 00:00. Lunch 12:00 to 16:00. Drinks 12:00 to 22:00. Dinner 17:00 to 21:00. Bike or bus. It is farther than the station.

How do you get in on Saturday night?

Tickets, a signup link, a start hour: none of that is on the board or the site. No shop like Ik Ben Aanwezig. The house rules that do sit there are the opening hours. Saturday the place stays open until midnight. Dinner until 21:00. If you want to eat first, book that table separately. A party night can fill the kitchen earlier.

Call or mail. Ask whether Disco Night is a walk-in or needs a reservation. Ask whether Joozt stays on if the room is full. You pay for drinks at the bar, ticket or not. That is a café night. Ramplaan sits on the west side. Plan a bike or a taxi home.

Later in the autumn the same house runs Thursdays for the Stinkende Emmer pub quiz. That is a different evening, with a price on the site: 3.50 euro a person.

What can you do earlier on 3 October in Haarlem?

Ramplaan sits on the edge. In daylight you can walk the centre first, in the StepQuests app, no group departure. After that it is a bike ride to the meadows.

The venue itself names Elswout as the walk at the door. That estate sits behind the meadows. No catalogue walk of ours, still a reason to arrive early if it is dry.
