About this outing

Your team assembles on the Grote Markt in Haarlem, with the Grote of Sint-Bavokerk filling one side of the square and the stepped gable of the Vleeshal facing it. From there this city escape game works outward through the lanes around the church and back over the Oude Groenmarkt. Haarlem keeps its centre inside a small ring, so most of the route is a matter of turning corners rather than covering ground.

Flat cobbles and short distances make this an easy outing for families with children, for friends, for couples and for teams from work. Two to five players form a team around one phone, with bigger groups splitting into several teams. Each player picks up a character and a task of their own within the mission, so the answers come out of the discussion rather than from one person. No guide leads you, and no starting slot is booked for you.

How to play

Four steps stand between the booking and your first clue on the Grote Markt.

  1. Book the City Game
  2. Check the instructions email
  3. Download the Loquiz app
  4. Start playing whenever you like

The formulas Magnus stole left a trail that runs through the back streets of Haarlem. Working from clue to clue you decode ciphers, answer riddles and stage photographs, from the courtyards near Nieuwe Kerksplein back to the shadow of the Bavo. Dividing the roles well is what keeps the pace up, since everyone holds a piece the others need.

With more than one team out at once the game becomes a race between them, and that turns it into a decent teambuilding afternoon. Nothing forces you to finish in one go: pause for coffee, then take it up again. Haarlem is compact enough that you are never far from where you left off.
