Haarlem spent merchant money on courtyards that still house people. The walk starts at Frans Loenenhofje, where the gate on Witte Herenstraat carries a lion without a head, and reaches Hofje van Bakenes from 1395, the oldest surviving hofje in the Netherlands. Beer paid for Brouwershofje. Yarn money paid for Hofje van Staats. Proveniershof was not alms: you bought in for a room and care until you died. Residents still live here. Keep voices down.
