About this experience

In the 17th century, a handful of Haarlem painters quietly rewrote the rules of European art. Frans Hals turned portraiture into theatre with a loaded brush; Jacob van Ruisdael invented the modern landscape; Pieter Claesz made breakfast look like philosophy. This ~2.8 km loop follows Hals through the city where he lived, worked and went broke — from his museum in the old almshouse, past the workshops of Jansstraat, through the merchants' Grote Markt and the bleaching-field views on the Spaarne. Twelve stops, roughly two hours, mostly outdoors. Two museums along the route (Frans Hals Museum, Teylers) reward an extra hour each if you have the time.
