Extra Activities at Stoomgemaal Halfweg
Join us on August 1 and 2 at Stoomgemaal Halfweg for a unique experience with steam technology and extra activities.
Why Stoomgemaal Halfweg Matters Now
Haarlem is not just about art and culture. it’s also a hub for history, technology, and innovation. Stoomgemaal Halfweg, the oldest and largest working scoop wheel steam pumping station in the world, opens its doors for extra activities on Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2. This is a unique chance to experience the magic of steam and engineering firsthand.
What to Expect
During this steam weekend, there will be technical tours and lectures that are worth attending. On both days at 10:30 AM, guide Han Maas will lead a tour, immersing you in the world of steam and showing you how the century-old steam engine and boiler operate. If you want to learn more, register via info@stoomgemaalhalfweg.nl, as spots are limited.
On Sunday at 1:30 PM, volunteer Ruud Wever will give a lecture titled “How Steam Won Over Electricity.” He discusses the decision made over a century ago to reinvest in a steam engine for this monumental pumping station.
Practical Tips
Make sure to plan your visit wisely and arrive early. It’s also a good idea to take a stroll in the area surrounding the Stoomgemaal. The location is beautifully situated in nature, offering a refreshing walk before attending the tour or lecture. Don’t forget, kids have free entry if accompanied by adults, so bring along your family!
And while you're in Haarlem, why not explore other activities? Consider joining a Haarlem Pub Crawl: Brown Cafés & Local Bars or enjoying a Brewed in Haarlem: Beer, Breweries & Medieval Trade experience.
